Disclaimer: Disney, Marvel, Dreamworks & ABC Family sent me to Los Angeles on an all-expenses paid press trip, in exchange for my coverage of these events, including this mixer with the Moms of ABC Family. All opinions are my own.
Throughout the 3-day press event, I knew I would be meeting and interviewing many celebrities, but there was one event that intrigued me most. One event wouldn’t be your typical celebrity interview…..and that’s what I found refreshing. It would be organic. We would really find out what these actresses were like.
The event….Moms of ABC Family Mixer.
The Moms of ABC Family attending –
- Marlee Matlin (“Switched at Birth”)
- Constance Marie (“Switched at Birth”)
- Holly Marie Combs (“Pretty Little Liars”)
- Laura Leighton (“Pretty Little Liars”)
In fact, it looked like I wasn’t the only one looking forward to the event:
Imagine, if you will, a beautiful southern California evening with a slight breeze. That’s exactly the type of weather I was enjoying while in LA…..the perfect type of weather for an outdoor get-together. So myself and 24 other fabulous bloggers headed over to a somewhat hidden garden area for a mixer with the celebrity moms…..the Moms of ABC
Family. Appetizers, drinks and great conversation. Nothing was off limits.
Not only were these actresses incredibly talented (ahem, we are talking Marlee Matlin, aka Academy Award Winner), but I knew I would have a lot in common with them.
If there is one thing that you can relate to with a celebrity, it’s being a mom. Even if they have help, we’ve all been there. We’ve had the dirty diapers. We’ve had the tantrums. We’ve worried. We’ve tried to juggle it all.
I knew we’d be talking about their roles on television and motherhood, but oh, the laughs we had. Just look at Marlee Matlin and Constance Marie – and see me off to the right laughing?
I expected to get laughs from Constance (oh, I loved the George Lopez show), but yes, Marlee Matlin was a hoot! And those two together…..not only are they co-stars, but you can tell they are true friends. In fact, Constance really impressed me with how much she used sign language, despite having an interpreter there for Marlee. (Side Note – we met Marlee’s interpreter, who also teaches everyone on set)!
I told you……hilarious! You should have been there! 😉
One of the things I really loved about Marlee Matlin was how open she was about the challenges of raising children, especially in this day of social media. Married to a police officer, you can tell Marlee is incredibly grounded, and that has obviously rubbed off on her children.
She really talked about teaching your children the importance of decisions they make – the consequences. Celebrities worry about their children, just like us.
And can I just say how generous they are! Marlee Matlin tweeted this after our fun evening:
Of all the moms, I related to Constance Marie perhaps the most. She, like me, has one child, a daughter. And they are around the same age. We chatted about how difficult it can be to be their “best friend” and only one to play with at times. But it’s a blessing as well.
Her daughter is a cutie and yes, we couldn’t help but pull out our phones and share pics of our girls!
TONIGHT ON SWITCHED AT BIRTH (Tune in on Mondays at 8:00pm ET/PT on ABC Family)
Bay and Emmett are elected senior prom queen and king on an all new-episode of “Switched at Birth,” airing Monday, August 11 at 8:00PM ET/PT on ABC Family. Regina, Kathryn and John are shocked when Bay tells them about the extent of Daphne’s self-destructive behavior, prompting the parents to set some ground rules. Bay reconsiders attending the prom when the school board implements a new rule regarding dance dress code. Daphne continues her downward spiral when a bad decision puts her job at the clinic in jeopardy.
And the moms of “Pretty Little Liars”……yes, while I didn’t get as much time to talk with them, I did get to meet Laura Leighton and Holly Marie Combs.
They love their roles on the show……..and call it the perfect job for a mom. They aren’t the main characters in the show, so they don’t appear all the time. Great for that home/work balance that many of us struggle with, including them.
TOMORROW ON PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (Tuesdays at 8:00pm ET/PT on ABC Family):
Ali’s games may have pushed her friends too far when an innocent man’s life is put in the balance in “A Dark Ali,” an all new episode of ABC Family’s hit original series “Pretty Little Liars,” premiering Tuesday, August 12th (8:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT). The pressure is on for Alison to identify the man police have in custody for her kidnapping, but the Liars know if she does it would be sending an innocent man to prison and possibly walking right into an “A” trap. With Emily trying to convince Ali not to play into “A’s” hand, Spencer comes up with a plan B in case Ali decides to make the wrong decision. Meanwhile, fed up with all of the Ali drama Hanna tries to lead a “normal” teenage life.
