The Travel Bug
I was in college when I got hit by the travel bug.
Ironically it was mom who I credit this with. Though she didn’t exactly enjoy flying, my mom started working for an airline during my college years. That opened up the world for me. I soon found myself flying off to far-away destinations like Singapore and Indonesia. Having more than one airline employee in the family allowed me to dream, explore and live life to the fullest.
I knew from an early age that my desire to travel could easily cost me a pretty penny. It was a good thing I’d been a “saver” all my life. I always had tucked away those babysitting dollars as a kid and deposited that Christmas money from grandparents. With traveling, I had found what I wanted to spend my extra money on.
Extra Money? Yes, if I wanted to travel often, I’d need extra money. As a young college student, I found one way to easily find some – with my credit card.
Extra Money from a Credit Card?
I know that most people think of credit cards as debt, so it might sound strange that I started earning money thanks to my credit card…but hear me out.
My parents taught me about credit from an early age. I knew that credit was important to my financial future. Credit would play a role in my financial security. But here’s the lesson they taught me…pay your credit card bill off every month. It’s a lesson I’ve kept for over 25 years.
In college, I needed a credit card for practical reasons and my parents helped me choose the card that remains my favorite today…my Discover Card. I quickly realized that I earned CashBack with every single transaction. That led me to do something I’ve never regreted…I charge almost everything during the month to my credit card. Groceries. Utilities. Clothing. Travel expenses. Everything. And I pay it all off every single month. Charging everything isn’t something I need to do, but it earns me a lot of CashBack Rewards – it’s basically earning me free money, money I use to travel.
The Need for Credit Cards while Traveling
Credit cards became an increasingly important companion while I learned how to navigate the country (and beyond).
I found that credit cards:
- Provided a safety net if I ran out of cash or happened upon a location that did not accept cash and/or check
- Often provided trip protection and insurance (an extra perk travelers might need)
- Provided an easy way to view travel expenses as you go and make sure you stay on budget
- Provided great rates when traveling in a country where they don’t use U.S. Dollars – far better rates than when exchanging money at a foreign airport
- Can provide an extra form of identification in case you lose your Drivers License, etc.
