Disclaimer: Disney/Pixar sent me to Los Angeles on an all-expenses paid press trip, in exchange for my coverage of these events, which included attending the INSIDE OUT Red Carpet Premiere. All opinions are my own.
Butterflies in my stomach.
Twinkle in my eye.
Smile on my face.
That’s how I would describe the moments right before I stepped onto the red carpet……at the INSIDE OUT red carpet premiere.
The premiere was held at the infamous El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, where just months ago I attended my first red carpet premiere, Cinderella.
Let me take you INSIDE the red carpet…….

A premiere has several aspects to it…….there’s the papparazi, the celebrities, the party and yes, the movie screening too.
With INSIDE OUT being a Disney*Pixar animated film, you can bet that celebrities and their children would be on hand. This meant the party would be family friendly and you’d get to see some of your favorite actors just being Mom or Dad. You know, like Mario Lopez putting lip gloss on his little girl. Totally happened.

This was the entrance to the INSIDE OUT Premiere and what an entrance it was.
Let me set the stage.
It was 100 degrees that day (at least according to the family member I called that afternoon). My body tended to agree. And while the heat had me hiding in tiny bits of shade at times bumping elbows with celebrities you might know, it didn’t keep the Disney*Pixar fun away. In fact, the sunny disposition of the premiere was perfect.
But I noticed something was different right away……
This red carpet premiere wasn’t a “red” carpet after all.
Check out the purple carpet, inspired by the colorful movie. I had previously wondered if it wouldn’t be rainbow colored (to reflect all the different characters).
One of the most fun aspects of any red (or purple) carpet premiere is that you get to dress up. There will be paparazzi taking photos and you just might be in the background. So it’s time for the fashionista in you to come out.
With INSIDE OUT having so many great animated characters, I knew I wanted a dress that would be inspired by one of them.
I chose this beautiful Ralph Lauren dress, inspired by SADNESS! 🙂
But let me step back a bit and give you a better glimpse of what is around us at a red carpet.
This premiere was held at the El Capitan Theatre and both the red carpet and premiere pre-party were held outdoors on Hollywood Blvd.
You’ll see above that fans lined Hollywood Blvd just steps away from famed attractions like Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Oscar steps! While the area is certainly roped off for the event, fans can see celebrity arrivals and some limited portions inside the party, but most of the party is partitioned off from the public.
Just steps inside the entrance you’ll find another group of people sectioned off, but this time much closer in to the red carpet.
Ah, the paparazzi.
And when there’s a celebrity arrival, it can get fairly noisy. The paparazzi talk to the celebrities and tell them to turn around and show off their outfits. It’s a little intimidating.
While I was walking the red carpet, the beautiful Garcelle Beauvais entered the carpet with who appeared to be her 3 sons. She posed for the paparazzi both with them and then separately before moving on to the next crowd – the interviewers.
Once you move past the paparazzi, there is an entire section of reporters and recording cameras. From ET Online to Regal Cinemas and everything in between, they are set up to talk to the cast and celebrities while on the red carpet.
Here you see I’m right behind INSIDE OUT’s own Lewis Black, who plays the character “Anger” in the film. He’s wearing a red jacked inspired by his character no doubt. Funny thing is that I did find some video where I’m in the background. My daughter thinks I’m famous. 🙂
After you savor every moment on the red carpet, and you really do, it’s time to enter the official pre-party.
Once inside, Disney*Pixar had set up a replica control panel just like in the movie. This was amazing and everyone – I mean everyone got their picture taken here. Including cast photos!
I joined fellow bloggers Carol Jones, Alison McFadden, and Stacy Molter as we walked through the party enjoying food, drinks and celebrity sightings!
This is a view of inside the premiere party!
Cocktail tables were set up. Tents featured opportunites for fun photos, playing Disney Infinity….and yes, there was a bounce house/slide. Disney*Pixar sure knows how to throw a party.
And the funny thing…….celebrities weren’t in a different special location. We were bumping elbows with them, sometimes literally. (For Photos – read on) All you had to do was take a stroll and there they were, though admittedly sometimes I didn’t recognize them at first. Or I would recognize them but forget their name until later. Oh, the joys of getting older.
It might have been the cupcakes which stole the show.
INSIDE OUT cupcakes were prepared by Fernanda Abarca Cakes, from what I’ve been told (a DreamWorks Animation Artist).
And there was Broccoli Pizza served……though you just might have to see the movie before you really understand why!
Disney*Pixar- clever as always. At the center of the party there was an incredibly interactive activity – one which tied into the film so well. They were collecting memories – just like in the movie.
Yellow balls were JOY.
Blue balls were SADNESS.
Green balls were DISGUST.
Red balls were ANGER.
Purple balls were FEAR.
They wanted you to write memories down on the balls and then the balls were whisked up through a suction machine and landed inside for all to see.
I picked 2 core memories…….
1 JOY – the INSIDE OUT red carpet premiere, something I’ll remember and cherish forever.
1 SADNESS – losing my mom, something that changed me forever.
And I teared up.
It was a moment that really made me think about the movie INSIDE OUT. I had the privilege of already seeing 2/3 of the film prior to the premiere while in Orlando for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. Thinking about the core memories which really shape our lives and the lives of our children was thought provoking – and I’ll talk more about that on Friday in my movie review post.
But now it’s time for the celebrity sightings…….and here are just a few!
Actress and comedian Paula Poundstone as she was entering the party. (pink suit)
And trying to be a little less recognizable, one of my favorite Saturday Night Live comedians of all time – Kevin Nealon! (Red shirt, Yellow cap)
David Alan Grier was chatting with Kym Whitley of “Young and Hungry” while I was getting some iced water. 🙂
Young fans will know Veronica Dunne, star of K.C. Undercover. We were able to chat with her and her friends while hiding from the sun briefly!
Okay, so I wasn’t able to grab this shot fast enough……but hello Mario Lopez. Such a sweet dad showing up with his little girl!
And then there was John Lasseter himself, Chief Creative Officer at Disney*Pixar, wearing one of his signature shirts – this one INSIDE OUT themed!
It was an incredible party and as always I found myself having the most amazing time – even singing for a few seconds along with Constance Marie, of Switched at Birth and George Lopez too. (I know she probably didn’t remember me from our ABC Family Moms Mixer last year, but it still was fun to have that moment!
Ah, but the sun was setting and it was time to head in to the theatre, grab some themed popcorn and head to the front row. Yes, my seat was in the front row!
And it was there that I learned the ending to the amazing story, INSIDE OUT.
There are no princesses. There are no dragons. But this is one extraordinary film.
INSIDE OUT opens in theaters everywhere on June 19th!
