Earlier this week I sat down at a local theater to watch an advanced screening of what will no doubt be another Marvel Studios blockbuster! Here is my Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 review and my no-spoiler remarks about what you must know before you go! (Affiliate link in post)
Don’t miss these (one of these is incredibly IMPORTANT and one is what parents want to know)!
1. A Sequel Worth Waiting For
You might be surprised to learn that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 was the VERY FIRST Marvel movie I ever saw.
It’s true. I wasn’t too much into action-packed movies, so my husband would run off with his best buddies anytime a Marvel movie would arrive in theaters. It wasn’t until my very first Disney blogger trip and press junket that I saw a movie which would have me dancing in my seat, crying my eyes out, and falling in love with a group of outer-space rebels.
I knew I would have to see the sequel (and yes, couldn’t be more excited about the third one on the way – it’s been officially announced)!
Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.
2. The Plot Thickens with New Characters
With all our favorite Guardians returning, including baby Groot (thank goodness), all is well in the universe, but there are new characters galore and I have a lot of questions.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Tommy Flanagan, Laura Haddock, with Sylvester Stallone, and Kurt Russell. Kevin Feige is producing, and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Nikolas Korda and Stan Lee are the executive producers.
I was surprised earlier this year when Marvel Studios released the news about Starlord’s father.
I wondered WHY? It’s what had us all on the edge of our seats as we waited for the sequel.
Enter EGO, played by the talented Kurt Russell, as Starlord’s father. I’m not 100% sure why his identity was released and not kept a secret (in the Star Wars way that Kylo Ren’s parentage was a jaw-dropping secret revealed during the movie), but I have my theories now having seen it.
All I can say is that you will not be disappointed with the plot. It’s incredible. It was unpredictable. And while the first movie had me crying during the first five minutes, this film still had me holding back tears, just not right from the start.
3. Baby Groot Steals the Show
Was there any doubt?
4 What Parents of Young Kids Want to Know
The movie is rated PG-13, so the question becomes whether your should take your younger kids and tweens.
It’s a very personal decision, as I sat next to a family who brought their 5 and 6 years olds with them to the screening. I chose not to bring my 9-year old daughter but I took my older nephew. You know your kiddos best.
I will say that as a mom, I’m happy that the movie, as was the last, is void of sexual contact/kissing, etc, but Marvel did push a little further with the sequel in both language and sexual references. You might get asked a few questions if you haven’t talked to kids about the birds and the bees as there is some talk of impregnating, etc.
The one visual scene that would probably go over most children’s heads is when we first see Yondu. We notice him in what apparently is called Contraxia (photo above), what I’ll call an outer-space type sin city. Though you only imagine what happened in the minutes before you spy Yondu, he is first seen with shirt off and finishing getting his pants buckled/buttoned in a “brothel” type place. Like I said, I think it will go over most kids heads and you witness no sexual activity.
Other than that, the intense fight scenes are what you would expect based on the first film.
5. There are 5 Scenes During the Credits
I learned during that very first Marvel movie that you ALWAYS stay through the credits. Even after being warned at this particular screening, I saw people get up (maybe they just needed to use the restroom real bad for all I know).
It’s important to stay through to the very end, as in between the credits rolling there are 5 scenes, each appearing separately. One is purely fun. Another hints to the future. Also you spy some of our favorite Guardians showing off their dance movies during the credits – I always love dancing and to be honest, that’s what I wish this movie had more of – but alas, there’s always next time).
All this to say…DON’T LEAVE!
