Disclaimer: Disney, Marvel, Dreamworks & ABC Family sent me to Los Angeles on an all-expenses paid press trip, in exchange for my coverage of these events, including my interview with Director James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy. All opinions are my own.
Did you see “Guardians of the Galaxy” this past weekend”?
It was quite the birthday present for Director James Gunn – $94 million made it the biggest opening in August history. I’m so excited to have been a small part of that……with interviews from the actors like Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel. But there was one interview that really surprised me…….James Gunn.
It’s his vision there on the screen. When I met the man behind the images, I knew exactly why things were the way they were in the film. I knew why someone like me, a non-action type film-goer, fell in love with the characters.
The answer……James Gunn.

And when we had the chance to sit down with him he seemed to already know who we were.
He laughed as he sat down…….”So many iPhones. You guys have been tweeting me and I love it, I love it. Yeah, I love it.” It’s true. We’d been tweeting with and at him ever since we saw the screening of “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
We started off the interview by talking about none other than Kevin Bacon.
Why Kevin Bacon?
Well, I know he’s not an actor in this film, but listen to what James Gunn has to say about so much dancing in this movie:
“When I say, you know, Kevin Bacon is a great national hero, I mean it. I love dancing, and I love pop music. I love super heroes and I love space adventures. And I love raccoons. So I have all the things I love in one movie. You know.”
And all those things together……it WORKS!
But what drew James Gunn to GUARDIANS?
I think the main thing that drew me to GUARDIANS was the ability to create a whole new wing of the Marvel universe. I would find a very difficult time, say making a sequel to another Marvel movie. Or even making another earthbound Marvel movie that’s leading into, directly into The Avengers, because you’re working so much within the world that’s already been created.
And with GUARDIANS, I was able to create, not just a new world, but new worlds.
New characters, new species. And I found that to be just the most freeing thing ever. When I was a little boy, I had a box. And this box, I was sort of obsessed with. I was obsessed with the solar system and all the different planets. And I would make drawings for each one of the different planets, of the species that lived on that planet. What their pets were. And what their houses looked like, what their water systems were like.
And this box became filled over time with this sort of universe inside of it, that I created. And that is, that’s where my heart was. And that’s still where my heart is. Because that’s what this movie is.
The time came when I was able to ask James Gunn a question directly. I’d been thinking about what I’d ask him and really wanted to know one thing.
I asked, Who was your favorite Guardian and Why?”
It wasn’t so much that I didn’t expect his answer, it was just that I had no idea this one question would bring out so much emotion in him. He got visibly choked up.
“The one I feel the most connected to is Rocket. Because I feel the outcast in Rocket. And although I think that Rocket is the meanest Guardian, I think he’s the most selfish Guardian. I think he’s probably the Guardian that learns the least at the end of the movie. He is the saddest. And, well, it’s very strange. Very strange I connected ’cause I started to get emotional.
But I feel like he’s just this little mangled guy that is completely alone in this world.
There’s nothing else like him, he’s been torn apart and put back together again. He was originally an innocent little animal, I love animals to begin with. So, I’ve come to love him. And, I think probably also because I probably had the greatest time in creating Rocket over any of the other Guardians. Rocket and Groot both.”
I’m so glad I asked that question. What depth!
As for the future of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, it’s pretty clear that James Gunn is already working on the sequel, but what about Marvel spin-offs?
He talked of having a deep enough connection to do any films…..a Gamora film, a Drax film, a Nebula film, and yes a Rocket and Groot film. It’s clear that these characters have enough depth to them to do just that. Hmmmm……..could be an interesting decade ahead!
