Disclaimer: Disney, Marvel, Dreamworks & ABC Family sent me to Los Angeles on an all-expenses paid press trip, in exchange for my coverage of these events, including my interview with Zoe Saldana. All opinions are my own.
Zoe Saldana is certainly a talented actress, one I’ve admired from afar for years. In fact, I really do LOVE the romantic comedy “Guess Who?” in which she starred opposite Ashton Kutcher. But last week I had the opportunity to sit down across from Zoe Saldana and see just how beautiful she is, both inside and out.
Yes, I sat down across from the assassin.
You might know Zoe Saldana also as Gamora, from “Guardians of the Galaxy”. As I looked her in the eye, I knew the risks and I was fully willing to accept them. 🙂
The film comes out tomorrow – August 1st:
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.
To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
Look at that smile!
Zoe Saldana is absolutely beautiful, but would she be believable as an assassin? I had seen the film the night before our interview and the answer is unequivocally….YES!
Well, Zoe had a good teacher, her nephew, on all things Gamora. Zoe recalls, “He told me she was taken from planet so and so. She was forced into a life of crime. And I’m like, “Yeah she’s bad ass.” He goes, “She’s not a bad ass, she’s an assassin.”.
There IS a difference! 🙂
One thing you’ll find about Gamora that was completely unexpected…. “she has a great sense of justice”, Zoe reminds us. I have to agree, having seen the movie already (it’s amazing…and I’m not even a huge comic book fan)!
Of course, someone had to ask about the green…..“The first time you saw yourself in full makeup what was that like for you?”
If there was ever a moment during an interview that needed video, it was this one (okay, and maybe the moment where I’m singing with Vin Diesel), but I digress.
You should have seen the expressions on Zoe’s face before she even tried to describe her makeup. Oh, it was a hilarious moment.
After all the laughter, Zoe recalled, “At first we tested with these contact lenses that just made me look like a lizard. And then they decided that it was better to not to do contacts because you’re able to sort of connect more with your own eyes. For some reason contact lenses are just not as penetrable as your own eyes.”
With 4-5 hours of makeup application per day, Zoe recalls the makeup even following her home…..”It was green everywhere. Like on the pillow and the tub. My dog was green. It was crazy.”
Gamora as a character…..Zoe saw her as a “Bull Fighter” yet “graceful”.
She’s actually a good person, but she was raised to be a bully.
I too found myself really drawn to the character of Gamora in the film, even though one’s tendency would be not to. As Zoe remarked, “she’s so interesting because she’s so conflicted. She’s actually a good person, but she was raised to be a bully.”
Those are such powerful words. It reminds us all to try and see the good in someone.
There’s some unexpected chemistry between Zoe’s character and that of Chris Pratt (Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord). And one can tell how much she respected Chris offscreen. How Zoe spoke of Chris and his physical transformation (and weight loss) told me volumes about her.
Zoe said, “That to me was the most inspiring thing of this whole process was looking at Chris’ commitment to himself. To, to not do what he did for cosmetic reasons, but for health reasons because he’s also a father and just prove to himself that he can do it.”
I was able to ask Zoe the very last question of the interview session….what a privilege!
“How does working on this action film compare with say romantic comedies?”
Here was Zoe’s response:
“I mean budget is very different. It’s like this one is much more alive. So there’s a lot more to do. There’s a lot more rehearsals, a lot more training. But I like doing those romantic comedies. I kinda’ wanna’ do more of them you know. I just wanna’ find the right ones.”
“I just have better experiences when I work with these types of Directors. I always say that if I was at a barbecue and James Cameron, J.J. Abrams, and Steven Spielberg, and James Gunn like they were there and we were all invited to the same barbecue we would find a way…..we would end up all talking together or me, at least, eavesdropping on that group. More than any other group.”
“I just find people like that so interesting and, and they challenge me in the way that I like to be challenged. So these movies I enjoy more because it’s what I like, where my passion and my heart is. I love romantic comedies, but I wouldn’t be able to stay in bed all day and just watch like– have like a romantic comedy marathon.”
I’m thinking we’ll be seeing more of Zoe in these types of movies again! How about you?
