The official embargo has been lifted for what many consider to be the most anticipated Star Wars movie of all-time, “The Last Jedi”.
And I can talk.
About it all.
But I won’t.
No Spoilers. But I will answer a few questions like, “Is The Last Jedi kid friendly?”. But no spoilers. And I’ll tell you why.
It was just two years ago that my family and I had waited patiently as my daughter recovered from a horrible cold so that we could see “The Force Awakens” as a family. My husband feared that someone would ruin it for him at work. I grew worried that I would see something inevitably on the internet, where I do my work every single day.
But we made it two entire weeks without hearing a single spoiler. We sat through the movie and looked at each other in disbelief at a certain jaw-dropping moment in the film.
That’s the way it should be.
Is The Last Jedi Kid Friendly?
As I say with all my movie reviews, you know your children best. So let’s start with a few things…
- Rating: PG-13
- Length of Film: 2 Hours 32 Minutes
I had the opportunity to sit and enjoy the advanced screening this past Monday with my husband. Though my daughter wasn’t with me, and though I wanted to relish in every detail, I couldn’t put aside the fact that I always want to view a movie through the eyes of a child, MY child.
As with all Star Wars films, “The Last Jedi” has some epic battle scenes.
We had re-watched “The Force Awakens” the night before, so I have to say that it felt like all battle scenes were a bit more intense. That said, if your child has seen other Star Wars movies, they are probably prepared.
Don’t quote me on this, but I only heard one “damn” during the entire movie.
The Scenes I Prepared My Daughter For
If your child is sensitive to certain things, you know it. I spotted two very short scenes that would probably bother my daughter (who is now 10) more than any battle scene.
Each scene involved animals. One scene meant to be a humorous one, but I’m afraid that would be lost on my child. Why? Let’s just say I’m shocked my daughter isn’t a vegetarian. Most people will laugh at this scene. Another, a scene involving the mistreatment of animals (and people/children) is very quick yet important to the overall story.
Though I know she won’t be thrilled during these scenes, they aren’t gruesome or too cruel for a child to see. But knowing that, I like to warn my daughter about them, so she is mentally prepared to see them. We do this with medical procedures or anything bothersome too. It works.
Why I Can’t Wait to Share This Movie With You
Other than the jaw-dropping moments that we all expect in a great Star Wars movie, there are a few things that stood out for me.
Oh my goodness is “The Last Jedi” funny!
In the moments you least expect. From the characters you’d least expect.
From the beginning of the movie, until the end. Hilarious!
While there have been a few leaks here and there, I’m not going to be the one to spoil anything.
Let’s just say there are cameos and I was elbowing my husband every time one showed up!
Rise of the Women
Although my daughter is already a Star Wars superfan (we all have matching shirts too), there was one outstanding reason I want to be with her the first time she sees “The Last Jedi” – the women!
From General Leia Organa to Rose (played by Kelly Marie Tran) and Amilyn Holdo (played by Laura Dern), in addition to the much-loved Rey, there is no shortage of incredible women in this film.
Will you love them? Will you hate them? I’m not saying. What I will say is that the roles are incredible, and I’m proud to see more women highlighted in this much-loved saga!
Are All My Questions Answered (the ones I had going into this film)?
But really, do you want all your questions answered right now? Okay, maybe selfishly I did.
Some questions were answered, others not.
But what I learned is that I have new more interesting questions, and the beauty of that is that we don’t have to wait all that long to find out the answers thanks to our wonderful friends at Disney and Lucasfilm. I look at the upcoming slates and get incredibly excited!
I’ll leave with you with a quote from Luke Skywalker, “This is not going to go the way you think”. I couldn’t agree more!
