Disclaimer: Disney invited me to California on an all-expenses paid trip, in exchange for my coverage of events, which included an exclusive interview with Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff, from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and coverage of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Blu-Ray and DVD release. I’ve got a giveaway too! As always, all opinions are my own. Affiliate link in post.
It wasn’t but a few weeks ago when I had one of the biggest surprises ever.
You see, I was at the D23 Expo, having just experienced firsthand one of the most EPIC Marvel moments ever. There wasn’t a person without goosebumps as Marvel actor after Marvel actor walked out on stage during the Disney, Marvel Studios & Lucasfilm – Live Action panel.
It was 10 years of Marvel Studios on stage…from Thor to Iron Man, right in front of my eyes.
But things were about to get even more incredible.
Our group of bloggers had a designated meeting spot and we quickly (and quietly) were ushered backstage. You know, backstage where all the Marvel actors had just been.
My heart started pounding.
As we entered a small room backstage, we were told that we would be interviewing 2 of the Marvel actors who had been onstage.
Then Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff entered the room.
Interview with Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff
Everyone was in awe as Karen Gillan (Nebula) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) sat down in front of us to talk about their characters, making movies, and of course the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
In fact, did you know the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Blu-Ray and DVD releases on August 22nd (and is already available digitally in HD, 4K Ultra HD™ and Disney Movies Anywhere now?
Talking about the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
Karen Gillan started off by saying, “I feel like it’s been received really well by the fans, and I felt like when we were making it definitely felt like we were making something special, and everyone was delivering. And it just felt like everything about the first film, that was so good about the first film was kind of amplified in the second film. So I feel like we took it to the next level. And it would seem that the fans agree with that which is always the most important thing, so that’s cool.”
When fans found out that “Nebula” turned good in the second film, Gillan mentioned, “I think maybe children are less scared of me now, because sometimes their parents would be like, “do you want a picture with Nebula?”, and they’d be like OH. But now they’re willing to take pictures with me, so I’m happy.”
Pranks on Set
Karen Gillan had us all laughing as she gently reminded Pom Klementieff how Michael Rooker showed his bottom to her…the only prank they could recall.
Klementieff said, “Oh, yes. It’s true. I forgot, but it was not during the shoot. It was during the rehearsals. Yeah, it was during the rehearsals. I was with James Gunn and Dave Bautista, and we were rehearsing a pretty emotional scene. You remember in the movie when I touch him and I see what he went through in his life. And at some point, we saw Michael Rooker, it was like kind of like emotional. And Michael Rooker was showing his butt by the window. It was like kind of like putting his butt, you know, against the window. I’m like “okay”.
Similarities with their Characters?
Karen Gillan quickly answered, “I hope I’m nothing like mine. I don’t know. I think I could, I don’t have any siblings, but I can definitely identify with insecurity, I think, as everyone can. My character is, you know, the sister, the least favorite. She’s not as good at fighting. She’s less attractive. She’s got no hair. She feels inferior and I think everybody can probably relate to that in some capacity.”
Pom Klementieff joined in the conversation, “Okay. Me, too. The insecurities, I mean. You know, we’re all insecure, and I think that the moments that move me the most is when she doesn’t believe in herself and she just needs someone to believe in her. And then he gives her the strength, and I think I have the same thing in life too, you know? And I think everyone, right? You just need someone to believe in you and to push you and it gives you the strength to to win it or to destroy or to bring love or anything, you know?”
Fun Fact: Karen Gillan doesn’t have to shave her hair anymore to play “Nebula”. She’s in the middle of filming Avengers Infinity War right now and mentioned, “Marvel has been very kind to me and they’re allowing me to look like a woman now, so I’m really pleased about that.”
Favorite Trait of your Character
I loved it when Karen Gillan shared, “Favorite trait? I really like the fact that my character can fight so well, and I really like that she is just like riddled with rage. I mean, it’s just overflowing, it’s just the most rage ever. And she’s got serious daddy issues which is just like the cool feel for the rage, and I just like embodying that.”
Sounds exactly what I imagine “Nebula” would say about herself.
As for Pom Klementieff, when talking about one of Marvel’s newest characters, she said, “I love her innocence, you know. It’s kind of refreshing, and it brings a lot of funny moments, too, because she doesn’t know, you know? She tries things and she discovers things and it’s kind of funny to play, you know. It’s like an animal a little bit. I like the fact that she’s weird.”
Biggest Challenge During Filming
Then I had the chance to ask these talented actresses about their biggest challenges in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
No surprise with Karen Gillan’s answer, once you really think about all she had to go through. Gillan stated, “The biggest challenge for me is probably the makeup process, just because it’s really intense. I mean, it takes about 4 hours in the morning to get ready, and I get up at two or three o’clock in the morning and go there, and then they stick skin on my face. But it’s so cool the way I turn out, that it’s so worth it. But it’s a challenge to get up at that time and go through that on a daily basis.”
She couldn’t help but add that getting the makeup taken off was the “best sensation ever”, noting that it was worth going through to have that! Too funny.
On Women Superheroes
The last question of the interview was one that dug a little deeper with these actresses. They were asked how they feel about being able to inspire change and empowering women who look up to superheroes and might not have that opportunity.
Karen Gillan said, “I feel like it’s about time. I mean, we’ve been craving this for a long time, and with everyone in the Marvel universe, all the amazing and also Wonder Woman, I mean, it’s just like it feels like there’s a real movement of strong and different types of women, too.”
Pom Klementieff added, “You can see the bad ass and really strong characters like Karen’s character or like my character, she’s more innocent and weird. And it’s okay to be either of these characters.
I loved how they talked about the differences in women and Gillan added, “Not every woman needs to be like kick ass and stern”.
So true. We all have our different strengths.
