Summer is officially here and if you are anything like me, yesterday you were utterly enjoying the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. I remember yearning back during those cold winter months for the days when the sun would set later in the evening, and one could enjoy sipping iced tea on the front porch.
Those days are here and I couldn’t be more excited!
Though summer definitely brings more fun and adventure, it can tempt you into maybe not living as healthy of a lifestyle as you did when those new year’s resolutions were made. So today, I’ll share my top tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout summer.
Top Tips to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle Throughout Summer
Get Plenty of Sleep
As a mom, I so looked forward to lazy summer mornings when I didn’t have to rush a certain little girl around – breakfast, clothes, hair-brushing, tooth-brushing. Oh, the school-year routine can be tough and draining. I’ll admit that we’ve both been catching up on our sleep as rest is so important for the body.
Though we might get to stay up later in the summer (think baseball games, watching fireworks), it’s important to remember to catch up on sleep when we can. That might mean sleeping in until 9am (or later – SQUEE!) or taking an afternoon nap. Rest and relaxation is crucial for the body.
Schedule Active Outings
It’s summer. Take advantage of the weather. Don’t wait to feel motivated to go for a family bike ride. Put it on the schedule for this weekend. Scheduling activities means there’s a greater opportunity that you’ll make an active summer lifestyle happen.
If you don’t particularly like exercise, plan to go somewhere which requires a bit more walking than your average outing. I know that we can walk miles and miles when we visit a theme park for the day. Not a fan of walking? Try kayaking. I just started kayaking in the fall and LOVE it. To me, it doesn’t feel like exercise and it’s so relaxing. Find something that you enjoy doing, as simple as that might be, and incorporate it into your schedule.
Remember: Physical activity requirements vary with each person. Consult your health care practitioner for the level of physical activity or exercise that is right for you.
Most importantly, make sure every member of the family is getting enough activity. Active summers aren’t just for kids.
Choose Healthy Foods
Unfortunately for me, when I think of summer, I think of light, summery desserts. Kids want more refreshing treats like ice cream and popsicles. And vacations always seem to add a couple extra pounds. Can anyone relate?
Though I think enjoying summer foods is part of what makes summer extra fun, I do my best to choose healthy options while shopping for our everyday needs.
I like to have a steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables that are already cut up and ready for kids and adults alike to grab when they are hungry. This helps avoid that unhealthy snacking that we sometimes do. With kids home all summer, it can be an all-day challenge.
Prepare Shopping Lists
Though it’s helpful any time of year, I find that especially during summer months, I need to plan out my meals for the week.
Sam’s Club is my go-to store because it simply has most of my shopping needs, from proteins and fresh foods to household supplies and pharmaceutical items. I make sure to take my shopping list here especially as it helps me walk the aisles like a pro (and avoid making spur of the moment decisions).
I love that Sam’s Club has made a printable shopping list to help!
