How many days left until Christmas? I bet many of you know without thinking twice (or your kids do)! 🙂
I had several advent calendars when I was little. I loved the thrill of opening the “doors” each day. Then there was the famous red and green paper chain countdown……I’m sure I’m not the only one who remembers that, right? But this year, it was time for something different.
Thanks to HarperCollins for sponsoring this post and providing books for this bookish countdown to Christmas.
Bookish Countdown to Christmas
This year HarperCollins Children’s wants families to start a new tradition, one that celebrates the magic of books. If you are anything like my family, you have many holiday books that you bring out each December. I have quite a few original books from my childhood, including “The Night Before Christmas”…..the one that my dad read to us each and every year. While some are falling apart, they are all cherished and make me smile when I see them.
Instead of bringing the holiday books out all at once, wouldn’t it be fun to wrap them all up and open one each day? You’d find a special time, maybe before bedtime, to open up the book for the day and read it. Each book gets a special day! I love that.
Inspired by the advent calendar, HarperCollins Children’s sent my family 25 individually wrapped books to begin this tradition! You should have seen the look on my 5 yr old’s face when she saw the 25 wrapped gifts! We’ve placed them on the fireplace and each night we plan on snuggling on the couch as a family for story-time. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Don’t have 25 holiday books? December half-way over? No problem…you could label the books to be opened on certain days like the 10th, 15th, 20th. Or start the countdown closer to Christmas.
Don’t have the budget to buy new holiday books? No problem…just wrap Christmas books you already have. It’s surely been at least a year since they’ve read them!
