A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine L’Engle) – as a bookworm, I am shocked that this was a book that never crossed my path. It’s a classic, and though a challenge, turning it into a visual masterpiece on the big screen was inevitable.
Just in time for summer break, Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” from acclaimed director Ava DuVernay, comes home May 29 on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD and Movies Anywhere and June 5 on Blu-ray™, 4K Ultra HD™, DVD and On-Demand. The stunning story of an ordinary girl’s extraordinary adventure through time and space offers exhilarating entertainment and positive messages for the whole family—encouraging self-confidence, inclusion and pushing imagination to the next level.
As part of my trip to LA, Disney arranged for an interview with one of the standout stars of A Wrinkle in Time, Deric McCabe, and not only do I bring you that today, but I’m giving 2 lucky winners a copy of the movie! Keep on reading to enter!
(Disney invited me to California on an all-expenses paid trip, in exchange for our coverage of events. As always, all opinions are my own. Affiliate link in post.)

A Wrinkle in Time’s Deric McCabe
Sure, A Wrinkle in Time has a star-studded, talented, and incredibly diverse cast – Mrs. Which (two-time Academy Award® nominee Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Oscar®, Golden Globe® and Emmy® winner Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling), but it was the children I was drawn to. In some ways, they really were the stars.
Three celestial guides come to Earth to share their wisdom and love with struggling eighth-grader Meg Murry (Storm Reid) as she journeys across dimensions with classmate Calvin (Levi Miller) and younger brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) in search of her father (Chris Pine), a world-renowned physicist who mysteriously disappeared four years ago.
Just an Ordinary Kid – Not Quite
We met Deric McCabe, a charming elementary-aged actor, on the Walt Disney Studios lot, accompanied by his father.
At first glance, Deric looked like someone my daughter would be hanging out with at school. Just a year younger than my own daughter, I was immediately drawn to him. But it was his personality that won me over, something I wasn’t even expecting – and if I could bottle up his energy, I would be a rich woman.
From the moment I walked into the small room with stage, Deric McCabe was front and center. We were waiting on quite a few people, so the interview hadn’t begun, yet Deric found himself very comfortably center stage “performing” so to speak. Though I dare say this is his personality, not a performance.
The high energy child quickly found himself showing off his cartwheel moves for us – impressive.
We soon found out that he and my daughter had a lot more in common. When asked what his favorite course in school was, some who have seen the movie and his character might anticipate something a bit studious like math or science. No – “Lunch!” Other than lunch – “Recess!”
Yes, he sounds like a typical kid who still attends regular school and hasn’t made the transition to homeschooling like so many young actors do.
But Deric McCabe is anything but typical. He found himself acting alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood and traveling to exotic places like New Zealand.
Not many 4th graders can say that.
On Acting, Scarlett Johansson, and being an Avenger?
Sitting on stage was where he seemed most comfortable, quickly pointing from one blogger to the next shouting, “YOU!”
Deric, though young, was still so much a child; however, he certainly understood the importance of diversity in this film and how it meant so much to him being part Filipino (and being his first big role).
He recalls the time he realized he wanted to be an actor.
Deric said, “This is going to sound really silly. But I was watching the Avengers with my dad. I was watching the Avengers with my dad and I just saw Scarlett Johansson and I was like oh, I want to do that. And I was like, and I’m going to meet her. So, then I was like, I think I want to do acting. So, they put me into acting and now here I am talking to all you mommy bloggers.”
It was clear from this interview that Deric might have a crush on the beautiful Scarlett Johansson. I say “might” but really, he does. His biggest wish is to work with her and I’m putting it out right there into the universe. I say we wait another decade or so and just see if Deric McCabe might be part of the Avengers one day. He doesn’t want to be a superhero that already exists. He would love to create his own. Hulk look out!
His advice for kids who want to get started in acting? Deric simply said, “When you don’t get any jobs, keep the faith.”
Spoken like a true actor, wiser than his years.
Oprah Ate his Popcorn?
Can you imagine what it must be like to play opposite Oprah Winfrey? As Mrs. Which in Disney’s A WRINKLE IN TIME, she commanded a certain amount of respect on the set I’m sure. But Deric had a great story of how he met Oprah the first time.
Over popcorn. Oh, yes!
Deric shared how on set they made this incredibly good popcorn. Once again, he’s all about the food! Deric had gotten his popcorn all set up with butter and some cheddar cheese on it, but quickly had to set it aside to join stunt practice for the cave scene alongside Storm and Levi.
It wasn’t Oprah’s turn yet.
Apparently Oprah started eating Deric’s popcorn and blurted out, “Who’s popcorn is this? This is delicious.”
I can just imagine Deric as he responded, “Oh, that’s me!”
He proudly beamed – “Oprah’s eating my popcorn!”
Of course you and I would imagine Oprah giving Deric some great takeaway from the film – advice on life or acting. And she did. Oprah told him, “There’s more to come after the movie.” He recalls sobbing on the floor jokingly, “No there’s not. My life is over”.
This kid. Watch out Hollywood!
