Congratulations to #8 Rochel S
I missed out on Amelia Bedelia in my childhood. I read my very first book just last year. I’m so glad I discovered her when I did…..now my 5 yr old can laugh and giggle right along with me.
This year is the 50th anniversary of Amelia Bedelia! Yes, 50 yrs! New adventures have been continuously published since 1963. The original author, Peggy Parish, wrote twelve delightful stories, and now her nephew, Herman Parish, is continuing the tradition.
Of course, there have been a few changes over the years. I instantly discovered that Amelia originally was a housekeeper, while now she is clearly a young student in school. No matter her age, Amelia Bedelia has always had one consistent theme……..being “literal” to a fault. That’s what makes her so endearing and keeps us in stitches.
To celebrate, Greenwillow Books has re-released the book that started it all, Amelia Bedelia Fiftieth Anniversary Edition.
On sale for just $9.14 on Amazon (hardcover)
When Mrs. Rogers leaves Amelia Bedelia alone in the house on her first day of work, anything can happen. And it does!
With a list of what is to be done before her, Amelia Bedelia sets about her duties. And no one could possibly accuse her of not following directions—for that is precisely what she does. But when Amelia Bedelia draws the drapes or dresses a chicken, the results are hilariously different than might be expected!
I must admit that my favorite part is when Amelia is told to change the towels in the bathroom. Of course, you and I know that she should just replace the dirty towels with clean towels. Well, Amelia actually “changes” the towels. The original story is so funny, it’s no wonder she has been around for 50 years.
This commemorative fiftieth anniversary edition also features several pages in the back that are full of the history of Amelia, including photos of all her “looks”.
Also released in celebration of the 50th anniversary is a collection of some favorite classic titles in the “I Can Read” series.
- Amelia Bedelia (the original)
- Amelia Bedelia and the Surprise Shower
- Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia
Priced at just $9.59, it’s a wonderful collection for elementary students. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia is hard to beat. Just imagine taking this phrase literally: “stealing bases”.
Of course, there’s a brand new I Can Read Book featuring Amelia as the young student we’ve grown to love, Amelia Bedelia Hits the Trail (I Can Read Book 1). Priced at just $3.99.
Yes, Chapter Books!
The first two have just been released. I read the first one last night!
Amelia Bedelia wants a new bike—a shiny, fast one just like Suzanne’s. Amelia Bedelia’s mom says that a bike like that is expensive and will cost an arm and a leg. Amelia Bedelia can’t give away one of her arms and one of her legs! She needs both arms to steer, and both legs to pedal. What Amelia Bedelia needs is a job.
Look out! Here comes Amelia Bedelia, and she means business!
