Reading transports you to another place or time. That’s how it has always been for me ever since I was a little girl devouring such chapter books like Little Women or Nancy Drew. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I see the same desire in her. She lives for the adventures each book provides, so today, I decided to bring you the best chapter book series for a 9-year old girl.
A little caveat, my 9-year old was an early reader, so adjust accordingly to your child. My daughter easily reads 500-page books in 2-3 days time. The challenge is always finding a LONG enough book, but one that is age appropriate. Sometimes that means reading the book myself.
1. The Little House on the Prairie complete set – from Little House in the Big Woods to the last of 9 books, The First Four Years, Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote of her experiences growing up in the 1800s. My daughter started learning a lot about history and this time period in 3rd grade, so it really was an ideal time to begin the series.
2. Kingdom Keepers book series – this series from Ridley Pearson is set in the heart of Walt Disney World, which happens to be one of our favorite places. The plot involves a group of middle schoolers who must work together to fight the evil Disney villains who are trying to overtake the Disney theme parks. There are 7 books in the initial series with 3 books that follow up. My daughter and I are both reading the series (taking turns) and are on the 4th one now. This is one the whole family will love.
3. American Girl book series – even if the girls have started to outgrow playing with dolls, the American Girl book series are still perfect for them. Why? The girls in these books are main characters in stories, and at or near the age of my daughter. That is important. It lets my daughter use her imagination in a way where she can easily see herself as a 9-year old during World War I or as a 9-year old living in France.
4. Dear America book series – to have the ability to view historical events from the standpoint of a young person their own age is priceless. That’s exactly what the Dear America book series does. Though similar to the American Girl books because of it’s historical view and at the age of the girls, it’s not tied to a doll or a store, so firls who have outgrown the doll phase might prefer these books.
Reading is so important to my daughter and I just can’t imagine her life without them. It’s why I’m proud to partner up with Fruit Shoot® to bring you the news on how you can help children in need and literacy right here at home.
