I remember those toddler and preschool years. I had a child with seemingly endless energy and I needed for her to have a creative outlet. This was especially true since she didn’t attend preschool or a place where teachers would magically provide amazing and easy crafts for kids to do. I was on my own.
Thankfully I was gifted with a mom who had some pretty crafty tricks up her sleeve as I grew up, especially around the holidays. So I remembered what I could.
I’ll tell you something though, I wish I’d had one book in my arsenal of parenting to help me when I ran out of ideas. Every parent, caregiver, teacher, or babysitter needs this book for some incredible ideas – all edible, which makes it that much more fun for kids of all ages.

Best Resource for Easy Crafts for Kids
If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know I love to have a little fun with food.
Worms in Dirt has always been a favorite after-school snack. Oh, and when I travel you can bet I will find the most colorful, tastiest treats around – dreaming of Hawaiian shave ice and Magic Kingdom’s Peter Pan float right now.
But who says the food fun can’t be out of this world extraordinary at home?
If you are looking for some easy kids crafts that will impress (for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary age kids too), look no further.
Arena Blake, founder of The Nerd’s Wife and personal friend of mine, has outdone herself with a new book, Awesome Edible Kids Crafts.
- TIP: You can find this newly released (Feb 2019) at your local bookstore or grab the book here!
I’ve watched from afar (okay, not really all that far since she lives right here in Dallas, Texas), as she’s created crafty fun for her son and extended family. Now she’s sharing her ideas so the rest of us can join in.
Let me take you on a tour inside the book so you know exactly why you need this:
Awesome Edible Kids Crafts by Arena Blake
Where are my Harry Potter fans?
You guys know how much we love Harry around here, having spent more than enough time testing out which butterbeer is best, or finding theme park secrets like how to get a Hogsmeade postmark from Universal Studios.
Whether you are wanting to have some fun surprising the kids with an announcement that they are going to Universal Orlando to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, or wanting to create the perfect Harry Potter themed birthday party, or just want an afternoon of wizardry fun, Arena takes us step by step to make these Wizard Wands.
Here’s what I love about her book as a parent beyond the creativity of ideas. Each edible kids craft contains the following:
- List of ingredients
- Equipment needed
- Rating of difficulty and amount of adult supervision required
- A “Did You Know?” fact for learning
- Color photograph of every craft
Yes, I’m a stickler for wanting photos to help me out, whether it’s a recipe or craft. Thank you, Arena!
Here is another great sampling of what is included in the book – marshmallow playdough!
The book is 176 pages of pure family fun and I can’t recommend it enough. They really are simple and easy, nothing to intimidate any of us.
A few of my favorites to look out for:
- Fairy Sandwich – so whimsical and fun
- Chocolate Geode – I’m going to make this just for me – so fun!
- Dragon Eggs
- Cupid’s Arrow Breakfast Sticks
Of course there are so many more in all kinds of categories, including:
- Let’s Play
- Party Time
- At the Zoo
- On the Farm
- Out in Space
- For the Holidays
- It’s your Fantasy
- In the Garden
You will be inspired and your kids will have so much fun getting in the kitchen to help.
