We’ve officially started a Family Game Night in our home. I’ve watched over the years as my friend Tracy and her family implemented this every Sunday night and knew that when I had a family, I would follow in her footsteps. While we are still quite limited with what we can play having a preschooler in the house, we have at least started the tradition. BUT, my husband and I try to sneak a card game or two in late at night just for fun without a 3 year old joining us.
Last year for Christmas, Santa brought us Scrabble Slam Card Game, and it is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s a quick game……which is important when you are the parents of a young child. Anyone relate? So I was excited when Hasbro Games gave me the chance to try out 3 of their newest card games.
Yahtzee Hands Down Card Game was the first game we played and I learned a big lesson….don’t try a new game at 1 am! 🙂 While not difficult at all, it’s not as easy as spelling out a gazillion 4-letter words as fast as you can (like in Scrabble Slam). 84 of the cards are Dice Cards, meaning they have a picture of one-side or two-sides of a dice. To win, you must score the most points by collecting dice combos – 3 of a kind, full house, etc. It’s pretty easy, but it was a bit different in that 3 if a kind had to be the same number and same color. That kept goofing me up because I’m so used to 3 of a kind being like one spade (black), one diamond (red), etc. Once I got it down though, it was easy and fun. Oh, and I’m supposed to admit here that my dear hubby beat me! 🙂
Okay, I have a new favorite ……SORRY! Revenge Card Game, and I am out for Sweet Revenge because my hubby beat me pretty bad tonight. Beginners Luck! This card game is fun and created for those of us at least 6 and up. Pretty simple….you just use your cards taking turns placing them one at a time in the play pile trying to add up to “21”. The person who gets the pile to “21” turns over a “Home” card…..turn over 4 of these to win. All seemed great because I kept getting to “21”, except there are special cards AND my hubby seemed to have all of them. He STOLE a few of my wins! Like I said….Revenge! Hence the name, Sorry Revenge. We might just have a re-match later tonight!
I had never heard of the classic game Mills Bornes before, so Mille Bornes Card Game was completely new to me. I am hooked now! No dice, no number cards, just craziness all around. You try to add up to so many miles with distance cards (200 miles, etc) and the first one to get there wins. But of course, their are speed limits your opponent throws at you along with accident cards, flat tire cards, etc. Get the picture? It’s pretty hilarious even with just 2 of us playing. You can also play with teams, which would make for an even more interesting game. This one is coming out during the holidays with family around!
