My daughter and I have had some good discussions this week…..some in part due to the latest story on our bookshelf, A Garden for Pig, the new children’s book from Kathryn K. Thurman. With apples, pumpkin, and acorn squash featured in this tale, it seemed an ideal choice for September.
This picture book, geared towards children ages 4-8, is based on the true story of the author’s pet pig, Basil, who lived on their family farm……..and “organic gardening”. The book starts out depicting the most wonderful scenes of an apple farm and Mrs. Pippins, the owner. Mrs. Pippins, of course, finds herself making amazing apple dishes…..roasted apples, baked apples, applesauce, and apple pie. There’s somebody on the farm, though, that doesn’t appreciate all her time in the kitchen with the apples anymore…..PIG. Pig has grown very tired of apples……he’d like a vegetable!
Pig finds himself staring through a fence at someone’s vegetable garden. He might have done a bit more than stare, because he ends up falling through the fence, squishing the veggies. Gorgeous veggies like carrots, lettuce, onions, and pumpkins. He does grab a bite of acorn squash before Mrs. Pippins comes up on the scene and puts him in his pig pen…..with nothing but apples. Seriously, I don’t know what Pig is complaining about…..she brings him Apple Flambe!
Here’s the funny part – the organic gardening part – the “discussions with my preschooler part” – the Pig’s tummy starts rumbling and tumbling……and he goes to the “bathroom”. “Out come the seeds”….the acorn squash seeds. After a bit of rain, guess what? Pig has started his own squash garden. LOL – true story. Pig is now very happy……he’s got vegetables. So, we’ve spent a bit of time this week talking about how “things work”….and how that’s perfectly normal. 🙂
The scrapbook-er in me absolutely loves the illustrations in this charming book. The background of the trees throughout the book – actual writing…..directions for a recipe. So clever and I’m sure if I looked pretty close it would be for an apple recipe.
APPLICATION: In the back of the book, the author has several pages devoted to “Pig’s Tips for Growing Your Own Organic Garden”. It teaches kids all about organic gardening, from planting to keeping weeds and pests away….even a bit on composting.
