My daughter hates to brush her hair. Always has. And the tears! Oh, it’s been tough to have a long-haired girl like that.
So I had to giggle when I saw the title of this Friday’s featured children’s book, The Girl Who Wouldn’t Brush Her Hair, by Kate Bernheimer and Jake Parker.
Giggle. Giggle.
I couldn’t wait to read it WITH my daughter. And thankfully, there were giggles from both of us.

It all began with, “There once was a girl who wouldn’t brush her hair”… and we never did get the name of that girl. But she did have beautiful long, brown and wavy hair, reminding me of my own little girl. After her bath every evening, she simply let her hair fall down and there was absolutely no brushing. At least she washed her hair, right?
One day, she discovered that a mouse had well, begun to set up a home in her hair. She wasn’t scared since she knew all the mice in her fairy tale books were helpers. Ha! She just let it be.
Now parents, you know we would NEVER let this happen, but hey, this is a book. 🙂
Each morning she woke up to new friends (all mice) in her hair until it was quite crowded. But soon there were problems, like the mice didn’t like to go in the water – they might drown. So she gave up bathing.
Needless to say, things were going downhill quickly.
Never fear though, you know this book will have a happy ending, one where you’ll find a girl with straight brown hair (and no-mice within.) But if you look closely, you might see someone else on the playground who has a new friend (or two.)
I love the creativity of this book. And while it may have hit close to home, it brought laughter about a subject that has brought many tears in our house.
