How to Make a White Cake Mix Chocolate
Why a Cake Mix in the First Place?
While I often bake from scratch, there are times that call for a box cake mix. Am I right?
Quite frankly, a box cake mix saves me time for so many recipes. Not only does my famous Coca Cola cake recipe call for a box cake mix, but I often use them for dump cakes and such. It’s just like how I use the cookie mix pouches to help make up a quick and easy Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie.
Hard to Find a Chocolate Cake Mix Right Now?
Lately (2020) my family avoids going to the grocery store in person most times, opting instead for weekly deliveries from some of our favorite places. You might have discovered that it’s not that easy (sometimes downright impossible) to find a chocolate cake mix online.
White cake mixes are seemingly the only ones I can find. No worries. as this box cake mix hack will help you out in a pinch if your kiddo has his heart set on a chocolate birthday cake or if you are like me and craving a favorite dump cake that demands chocolate!
Is it Possible to Make a White Cake Mix Chocolate?
Yes. And it’s one of my favorite kitchen hacks.
Best Box Cake Mix Hack
To make your white cake mix chocolate, simply look no further than your pantry. You’ll simply need cocoa.
I used Hershey’s Cocoa – 100% Cacao Natural Unsweetened, but you can use whatever you have in your pantry.
Before following the instructions on the cake mix box, do the following:
Empty the white cake mix into a mixing bowl.
Add 1/4 cup of cocoa (use Hershey’s Cocoa – 100% Cacao Natural Unsweetened or something similar).
Whisk together.
Then continue to prepare the cake mix as you normally would, either following the instructions on the cake box or following whatever cake recipe you have which uses a box mix.
That’s it. Couldn’t be simpler to turn a white cake mix into a chocolate one. So delicious.
I just made a favorite dump cake with this hack and it was chocolate-y heaven.
So if you can only find white cake mixes in stores right now, never fear. It’s a simple hack to turn it into a chocolate cake mix (without the need for starting from scratch with other items you might not have – flour, sugar, etc).
Enjoy!

Thanks Debra! Making cake pops & wanted to make vanilla & chocolate without making 2 cake mixes. Figured this was the way just needed the guidance & amount of cocoa to add!
Happy Holidays,!
Oh so glad this was helpful Val! Cake pops sounds so fun!
Do you need to add any more sugar when making the dump cake?
Not at all! There’s enough sugar in everything else. 🙂
I LOVE this! But I’m wondering if adding the cocoa powder doesn’t make the cake a littler drier? It usually soaks up moisture so do you have to add more butter or liquid to the cake?
No…it turned out perfect and was very moist. We didn’t add any more butter or liquid at all. 🙂
