In my family, we love to play board games. We are competitive by nature too. In fact, sparks first flew between my husband and I while at a game night with friends. 🙂 But, my love of games started as a young child. I still have many of the original board games that my parents had. Sadly (half-kidding), I had to share some with my sister.
In fact, for some reason, I think my sister has my favorite board game from my childhood. Yes, my favorite. How did that happen?
But, thanks to my new friends at Winning Moves Games, it is back where it should be. Not the old one from the 70’s, but a brand new one!
My favorite game – PAYDAY!
For ages 8 and up and from 2-4 players, it’s the “classic Game of Making and Spending Money! You’ll make money every month, but you might spend it just as fast!”
Maybe I was destined to be “A Frugal Friend” after all. I absolutely loved this game as a child, and still love it today as I played for the first time in years with my 6 year old the other day. Now, I know that it says 8 and up, but that certainly depends on your child. My 6 yr old is an avid reader and could certainly read all the cards and game board on her own.
The game is a bit complex for young children, but it is valuable as a teaching tool. In fact, it’s useful for my 6 year old in that it:
- Reinforces the days of the week (names, order) and what a month looks like in reality.
- Counting (counting spaces as she rolls the dice)
- Reading (board game, mail cards, bills, etc)
- Introduction to money (we have been using this to introduce her to higher denominations) – order, counting
- Math (adding money, subtracting)
- Paying bills at the end of the month
While it might sound like a lot of education (oh, it is), it’s really so much fun. You roll the dice and move along the board collecting bills and mail as you go. At the end of the month is PAYDAY – where you collect your salary, pay any bills you might have, etc.
Contents:Game board, 4 tokens (red, yellow, blue & green), 1 red die, 64 deal & mail cards, savings & loan pad, money, and rules
Of course, my favorite part as a child was landing on “Mail”, where you select however many mail cards the spot tells you. You’ll be surprised with who sends you mail. So fun and my daughter loves it too!
