***Giveaway now closed***
Congratulations to:
#77 Roseanne

The year 1973 is a bit of a blur for me…..I was still in diapers I’m sure. But it was a huge year, and a certain horse named Secretariat made the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated, all in the same week.  If you don’t know the story, trust me, you’ll want to….and Disney has taken this true story and turned it into a heartwarming, inspiring, all-american family movie!  (And yes, I LOVED it)…more on that later.

SECRETARIAT hits theaters on October 8th, 2010.

Based on the remarkable true story, “Secretariat” chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich)—manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.

While in New York City to attend the BlogHer conference, I had an opportunity to attend a private screening for Secretariat thanks to Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.   I jumped at the chance for two reasons.  One, huge Disney fan here.  Two, I thought it might be the only time at BlogHer that I could sit in a nice air conditioned building and just relax for a couple hours (much needed since my feet hurt from all the walking, and my voice hurt from all the talking).  So, I headed to 42nd street with my wonderful friends and roommates for the week, Cathi (Simply Cathi) and Kailani (An Island Life), to attend the screening (complete with butter popcorn of course).

Here’s the trailer…….it still gives me goosebumps to watch it:

I’m not going to spoil anything for you…you’ll have to watch the movie.   Let me tell you that I’ve never been to a horse race.  Never really have been interested to go.   BUT, I was on the edge of my seat with this movie.   I knew how it ended…..it’s a true story after all, but it didn’t matter.  I was emotionally attached to the characters.  Disney, like with most things, did an amazing job from the cinematography to the score.  I laughed and cheered….and I cried. (Side-note: you know you’ve made a great friend, when she reaches across seats to give you a squeeze during a scene that she knows is personally hard for you to watch).

This is a family movie (Rated PG), and one that I hope to share with my daughter when she’s a bit older.  There are so many lessons to be learned from the movie.  It’s a story about the underdog….and I’m not just talking about the horse.  I’m talking about Penny Chenery (played by Diane Lane)……a simple housewife in the 1970’s who goes against the odds (and sometimes her own family) to do what she needs to do.  I sat there in awe as I watched her character….she inspired me, and I hope one day she’ll inspire my daughter too.  While we live in a much different time, the lessons remain.

After the screening was over, we headed to the Westin, where we had a chance to visit with producer Mark Ciardi, who is also known for producing movies like Miracle and The Rookie (Widescreen Edition) – yes, both amazing and inspiring films just like Secretariat.
