#116 Mozi Esmos Mommy
Having a three year old in the house has been interesting lately. It’s all about being independent. She wants to do everything by herself, and she’s figuring out that yes, she can do quite a lot, especially with those two hands of hers. She can brush her long hair, she can use a zipper, and she can even swing the golf club pretty well. Those two hands that have learned so much are the subject of Max Lucado’s latest children’s book, One Hand, Two Hands, published by Tommy Nelson (Children’s Division).
The colorful illustrations show a young girl interacting with her animals, both real and stuffed. She uses her hands to pet her puppy, put on a performance with bear, frog and bunny, as well as playing baseball with her team. She knows that her hands are good for doing things for herself (and being independent), but learns a valuable lesson……that they are also good for helping others. She washes dishes with Mommy and cleans up dirty clothes with her brother. At the end of the day, she even uses those hands to be thankful and say a prayer…..
One Hand, two hands,
Five Fingers, ten….
God, thanks for my hands.
Please, use them again.
I love that there’s an application page at the back of the book, complete with illustrations. It has lists ways children can use their hands to be helping, loving and kind. Things like gathering the trash, drawing a get-well card and hugging. This is a great tool for parents to use for discussion. I know I’ve had a few chats already with my daughter and it’s been so helpful because it’s built right into the book and an automatic activity that we can do.
A wonderful children’s book!
