Can you believe that Strawberry Shortcake is 30 years old? I can….I remember her well. I still have a few Strawberry Shortcake items in the attic that I need to finally get down for my daughter, as she’s discovered Strawberry and all her friends in the new movie, Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball Movie.
From the DVD:
Celebrate winter with Strawberry Shortcake and friends at the Glimmerberry Ball. It’s a delightful, fun-filled time as the girls exchange presents, solve a hollow tree mystery, and set out to carve the most beautiful Glimmerberry lantern ever. Just like Strawberry says, “The whole community will come together and work together and help each other–friends helping friends–during the long months of winter. That’s the real meaning behind it!
Two Strawberry Shortcake DVD’s arrived at our house and my daughter definitely knew which one she wanted to watch first….Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball Movie. She noticed that this Strawberry Shortcake character looked different than the other (how perceptive)…..right down to the eye color. This version is much more modern, from hairstyles right down to the winter jackets (which by the way I loved and want one myself).
I always look for the teaching point in a movie, and there’s one that you don’t get a preview of just based on the product description. Strawberry and her friends are designing their own lanterns. One friend, Raspberry, is very secretive about hers and doesn’t want to share her design with the others. When Raspberry discovers other designs similar to hers, she is furious, accusing others of copying. This sets off a chain reaction with everyone but Strawberry thinking others must have copied theirs too. Of course, Strawberry figures out why all the designs are so similar…and what inspired them to be that way. No one copied. Huge teaching point here for parents.
The approximately 64 minute movie was a bit long for my 3-year old, but she ran off to play and came back a bit later. She was even eager to color a Strawberry Shortcake coloring page of the DVD cover once the movie was over. She loved it…..and she had to tell me that her favorite character is BLUEBERRY. 🙂
