Disclaimer: Disney, Marvel, Dreamworks & ABC Family sent me to Los Angeles on an all-expenses paid press trip, in exchange for my coverage of these events. All opinions are my own.

The handbags in bold colors. The shoes. The accessories. The dresses. The little white and gray skirt, a favorite of Tori Spellings’, from H&M (yes, surprisingly affordable). Oh, to have a closet like this.
You can imagine that any set visit to “Mystery Girls”, the new ABC Family hit show starring Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling, would require a trip downstairs to “Wardrobe”. Oh, and we made the most of it.
But I skipped ahead, didn’t I?
It all started with an invitation to attend a 4-day press event with Disney, Marvel, DreamWorks and yes, ABC Family in Los Angeles. So last week I headed off to Los Angeles and on the first full day I spied “Mystery Girls” on the itinerary.
Mystery Girls, starring Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth follows two former detective TV show starlets brought back together by a real-life mystery. Charlie Contour (Garth) is a suburban housewife and mother, while Holly Hamilton (Spelling) longs for her glory days in the 90’s when she was on television. Both of their lives are disrupted when Nick (Pinzon), a witness to a crime and a ‘Mystery Girls’ fanatic, will only speak to the infamous duo, and the former friends must reunite and put their TV crime-solving skills to the test.
I must admit that I watched most of the “Beverly Hills 90201” episodes way back in the day. After all, it premiered when I was in college. So I know all the back stories, cast, and yes, the theme song, which I couldn’t help but hum when I first got the news I’d be interviewing “Donna” and “Kelly”….sorry, I mean Tori and Jennie. 🙂
I was curious about this new partnership on Mystery Girls.
Last Thursday myself and 24 fabulous bloggers headed out to Studio City, CA and onto the CBS Lot, where “Mystery Girls” is taped. It’s not the first time I’ve walked on a lot, so I kept my eyes peeled as you never know what (or WHO) you might see. In fact, I quickly figured out that “Hot in Cleveland” tapes right next door to “Mystery Girls”.
We walked right onto the set as both Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth were taping some commercials to air in the future for “Mystery Girls”.
Lights. Cameras. Action. We saw firsthand just how many people it took for a few seconds of filming. It’s not just the actors who make mistakes, as we saw while Tori and Jennie were “sushi chefs”.
We ate lunch on the set, a wonderful spread of Asian food, but had to do so very quietly. That was a bit hard when you are trying to open a soda can. 🙂
Eventually, once the commercial taping was done, we were able to watch Tori Spelling rehearse several scenes for the season finale. While I certainly can’t spill the beans, I can say that the handsome detective was in the scene we saw.
Once done, both Tori and Jennie joined us for a Q&A interview, where we talked about everything from their friendship over the years to “Mystery Girls” and parenting.
And see that white skirt with poodles on it that Tori is wearing? That’s the one from H&M. A little fashion tidbit. It’s the H&M Scuba Skirt – only $49.95.
Tori Spelling was one of the creators of “Mystery Girls” and got her inspiration from her dad’s shows. She was a huge fan of mysteries in the 1980’s, recalling Remington Steele, and wanted to pair that with comedy. I have to admit that I was a huge fan of Aaron Spelling shows like Remington Steele too.
“Mystery Girls” seems like an easy fit for both actresses as they talked about how the set can be their “job” and “day care” at the same time. For Jennie Garth, the material comes second to where it actually shoots. That really resonated with me as a mom.
In both reality and on the show, Jennie is the big sister and protector of Tori. You can see that between them. There’s a friendship there. It’s not new. There’s a history.
I was able to ask them who specifically they’d hope to have from “Beverly Hills 90210” cameo on “Mystery Girls”. They both seemed eager to have Shannen (Doharty) and Luke (Perry). Which brought them to mention tonight’s episode…..
YES….. “Beverly Hills 90120” fans will be delighted to see a cameo from Joe E. Tata, who played “Nat” on 90210, on tonight’s episode.
Tune in at 8:30pm ET/PT on ABC Family – Wednesday’s (7/23) episode:
The hallowed halls of West Beverly High are filled with familiar faces when “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Joe E. Tata (Nat) guest stars on an all-new episode of “Mystery Girls,” airing on Wednesday, July 23rd In “High School Mystery,” Holly’s high-school principal Mr. Frost (Joe E. Tata) hires the Mystery Girls to make sure he does not become the target of the senior prank before he retires.
When asked about parenting, the Mystery Girls had plenty of advice.
Tori’s Parenting Advice: Trust your instincts and talk about feelings (she didn’t do that growing up, she recalls)
Jennie’s Parenting Advice: Blend being strict and structured with freedom, but make sure you are the one in charge. (I couldn’t agree more)
And for those of us who are working moms, the Mystery Girls had something to say about that too.
Tori’s Tip – “If you want to get something done, give it to a Mom”
Jennie’s Tip for Working Moms – Get a good calendar app and color code everyone in the family.
The set was fun and colorful as you can see. I even unexpectedly matched with my orange shirt and cardigan. Who knew pink and orange would be all the rage?
Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth and new actor Miguel Pinzon, who plays their assistant, joined us in the “Mystery Girls” office for a group photo. (I’m in the center right above Tori and Jennie, wearing orange)
Miguel Pinzon had just that afternoon found out he was nominated for the Teen Choice Awards in the category of Male Breakout Star! He was thrilled. So down to earth, I found myself hoping he’ll win! He posed for photos with everyone and I must say he was a hoot. Hilarious guy I tell you!
I had caught him outside the set working on “fashion” for the show as I ran off the set looking for a restroom. He waved and posed for this picture! What a sweetheart! Look at those crazy wild pants they were talking about. I’m certain we’ll see those on a future episode. Don’t you think?
Once the interviews were done, the cast headed off to lunch while we enjoyed some time checking out the “Mystery Girls” office. Do you think they’d need a 3rd Mystery Girl? I might just apply for the job.

Of course you already know I headed down to Wardrobe for some extra fun, but while we waited, I had the opportunity to meet Director Michael Lembeck. Now if he looks familiar to you, you are right. Not only did he star in the wildly popular, “One Day at a Time” years ago, but he has directed some of the best comedies around…..”Everybody Loves Raymond”, “Friends”, etc.
What an opportunity to talk with him. He shared how he grew up with celebrities in his own home, as his parents were in show business. He wasn’t usually star-struck. But there was one time. With one big star. And it was embarassing how star-struck he was.
What an afternoon!
Be sure to tune in tonight, Wednesday, July 23rd, 8:30pm ET/PT on ABC Family!
