December came in with a fury. This mom felt it too.
My fall had been spent flying from island to island, both with and without my family. So much, in fact, that I never put my suitcase away. It was clear that once my work trips were over, I needed some down time with the ones I love.
But that down time really didn’t end up being down time. Do you know what I mean? It’s the perfect time for me to talk about this, and thanks to Springfree Trampoline sponsoring this post, I’m going to share just how hard it is to do what I want most of all.
While I was away for so long and calling home each night to talk with my daughter, I envisioned running home and having days of just doing nothing. Sleeping in. Breakfast in bed (okay, a girl can dream)! Movie time. Just good quality family time. But then I came home and reality hit.
Yes, reality hit hard. There was so much laundry to do. The refrigerator and pantry were practically empty. Mail was piled high waiting for me to deal with insurance questions, school functions, and holiday events. We were in the middle of selling a car and looking for a new one.
The to-do list was long. And while I won’t deny that there have been some quality family moments, truth be told, not near enough.
Once the last week of November hit, I was instantly reminded that things needed to change. I was “missing it”. Having lost my mom during the Christmas season, just after decorating the tree as a family, I knew what my priorities were. We needed to slow down. Not completely, but we needed to spend more time making memories – a priority every holiday season.
I had a dilemma though. With so much to be done, we would have to give up a few things. Things, activities, or even just push some lesser to-do’s further down the list.
First, I decided to head out on some spontaneous mother/daughter time at a local outdoor shopping area, one decorated ever so perfectly for the holidays. Icicle lights in the trees. Holiday music faintly heard in the distance.
We had smiles on our faces, even more so when we came upon the local Springfree trampoline store. I mean, this place was a storefront, but oh the smiles on the faces were priceless. Why? There were two fully netted trampolines set up IN the store. And the kids could jump on them and test them out – one at a time.
Lucky for this girl of mine, she happened to be the only kiddo in the store at the time (it didn’t last long though – ha)!
So she put her shoes in the cubby, unzipped the trampoline, and headed inside.
Look at that smile!
She was jumping and moving around so much on the trampoline that it was hard to take photos through the netting – that’s a good thing!
I can tell you one thing, she fell in love with all the accessories. I had no idea you could add on accessories like this incredible basketball FlexrHool with ball – a bestseller and I can see why. My daughter rarely let the ball out of her hands (and she’s not a sports lover by any means).
It was time to put the phone away.
No checking Facebook to see which of my friends were traveling overseas. Email was put on the backburner, though it might have meant missing out on a quick job opportunity. And my favorite pastime, scrolling through my photographs, would just have to wait. My present (not past and not future) was right in front of me. She was calling my name.
“Mom” – “Hey Mom”
“Look at this”
My heart melted. This sweet face still wants her mommy to watch her. And I need to savor every minute because it might not last that much longer.
So, especially during this holiday season (and maybe beyond), I’m determined to give up time with my face in my phone (even if it’s work-related), so that I can see more of these smiles and find myself smiling too.
My daughter? She has decided she wants to give something up too.
What is something you are willing to give up in order to spend more time with loved ones?
What I discovered during this little afternoon getaway was that this kid really likes jumping on a trampoline. Maybe just maybe we are in talks to have one put in the backyard – WHAT??!! Exciting times my friends! I think the three of us will LOVE it!
