As a lifelong Disney fan, I’ve seen just about every animated movie in their collection………but every once and a while I find a true gem that digs down deep and touches me in a very personal way. I found that with the recent film from Disney*Pixar, THE GOOD DINOSAUR.

Having broken my foot last fall, we never made it to theatres to see any movies. So my little girl was beyond excited when The Good Dinosaur arrived on our doorstep! Yes – it’s out on Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital HD now!

From the innovative minds of Disney•Pixar comes a hilariously heartwarming adventure about the power of confronting and overcoming your fears and discovering who you are meant to be. The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely, and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?

In this epic journey into the world of dinosaurs, an apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

The Good Dinosaur isn’t exactly what I thought it to be from movie trailers. And I love getting surprised. The movie isn’t really at all about how dinosaurs became extinct……that was just a few seconds of seeing an asteroid passing by Earth. The movie really boils down to Arlo, and his path as he faces the future. It just happens to be set in a dinosaur world. It just as easily could have been set in a human one, as we all can relate to the challenges.

The animation is breathtaking. There is a scene that is memorable to me for so many reasons. A moment where Arlo is gently “pushed” by his father to face his fears in order to see the beauty in the world. It’s one of those moments Arlo would remember for the rest of his life, as he would soon lose his father and be forced to face an uncertain and difficult path to get home to the rest of his family.

Did I tear up – yes. As someone who lost her mother, I couldn’t help it. But the movie also was a great lesson in how one moves on from such a tragic and unexpected moment in life. Even I, in my 40s, needed to hear this message.

As my 8-year old mentioned when we watched the movie, “It looks like all the pictures are real, minus the dinosaurs”. Set in a mountainous region, I couldn’t agree more. And the music, so perfect, reminded me of the old Brad Pitt movie, “Legend of the Fall”.
